Earthship - Biodiesel33

Earthships – love them, wish I lived in one – sustainable, eco living and off grid. They were first dreamed up and constructed in Taos, New Mexico. Canadians have adopted them – in BC and now one of the coldest places near an urban centre is building one, in Manitoba

Rubber tyres and dirt are the main construction materials – all recycled materials where possible, even water is reused at least 4 times – from drinking to cleaning and flushing toilets(grey water). earthship.com has plans for sale as well as lots of information.

Victoria CRD (Capital Regional District) has the best resource for ‘where to recycle’ at myRecyclopedia with how to recycle cassette tapes (does anyone know what those are anymore?) to how to recycle your dishwasher.

Earth Day In Victoria, BC

Posted in Eco Aware, landfill, Recycled tires by Leona
Apr 22 2010

Earth Day, Earth Week and Andrew Weaver  is taking the National Post to court – fighting the good battle against opinions not based on facts.  Andrew Weaver, Professor and Researcher,wrap-recycle-logo is based at the University of Victoria and is an outspoken defender of climate research and researchers.

In the meantime, Ontario is using law-making to change tire disposal to tire recycling.  At the moment 50% of scrap tires are shipped as fuel in cement making kilns or to the US power plants.  This new legislation means tires will have an end use – upcycling instead of burning.  Ontario processors are increasing capacity to cope with the increase in tire recycling .  Another example of Zero Waste adding to the economy of Canada.  Other provinces take note, especially those with Premiers (B.C. for instance) who talk the green talk but not the walk.

Which brings me to the Earth Day walk on Saturday starting at 12noon, or thereabouts, at the Parliament building in Victoria and ends at Centennial Square were we will all be celebrating our love of this planet.
